Kawai Water Treatment Plant Redevelopment Project in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture
Japan's first PFI project to update, operate, and maintain entire water treatment plant
Cerarocca at Kawai Water Treatment Plant commissioned in 2008, has been in operation since 2014.
METAWATER operates and manages a special purpose company (SPC) by the name of Water Next Yokohama as the representative company. By maximizing use of ICT, design and construction using natural terrain, and the operational know-how of private-sector companies, METAWATER has been able to achieve greater efficiency, lower costs, and lower environmental impact than conventional water treatment plants.

Safe and reliable tap water provided using ceramic membranes with pore diameter of 0.1 ?m, which is impervious even to protozoa.

Solids (sludge) removed from raw water are 100% effective for building materials after dewatering. Use and recycling.

Energy-saving equipment installed to maximize use of energy gained through difference in elevations between water sources and water treatment plants.

Water used to wash ceramic membranes and filtrate discharged after dewatering sludge returned to water treatment process for reuse.

Energy-creation equipment that significantly reduces CO2 emissions by utilizing solar power generation installed on facility roofs.

Facilities established to promote importance of water and provide opportunities for citizens to learn more about water.
Improvement of Wastewater Treatment Facilities at Fisheries Processing Park in Onagawacho, Miyagi Prefecture
Japan's first self-supporting PFI project for the centralized treatment(purification) and management of wastewater from fisheries facilities damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake
Launched in 2015, Fishery Support Onagawa is an SPC, of which METAWATER is the representative company, engaged in the centralized treatment (purification) and management of wastewater from a fisheries processing park in Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture.
In order to protect the good fishing grounds of Onagawa and support the quick restoration of marine product processing facilities, METAWATER is working with local companies in the running of "Fishery Support Onagawa."

- Established: February 12, 2014
- Project methods: PFI (Private Finance Initiative)/BTO (Build Transfer Operate)
- Project period/
Construction: April, 2014 to September, 2015
Operational: April, 2015 to March, 2035 - Water treatment capacity: 2,000m3/day
- Water treatment system: pressurized flotation + modified Ludzack-Ettinger process (MLE) + high-performance dewatering + drying

Corresponding SDGs

Wastewater from fisheries processing park batch processed to improve deteriorating Onagawa Bay water quality with introduction of "pressurized flotation + modified Ludzack-Ettinger process (MLE)", a wastewater treatment system with extensive track record of stable operation

Study and implementation of power-saving operation methods such as intermittent operation

After being dewatered, sludge is then dried in the facility before being sold and recycled as a raw material for bacterial fertilizer to reduce environmental impact.

Fair and universal rate tariff system created to centrally manage fee collection.

Chemical consumption reduced in consideration of daily and annual fluctuations in raw water characteristics.

Contributing to the reconstruction and sustainable development of Onagawa by contributing to the community and society with support for various local events
