Singapore's First Ceramic Membrane Water Treatment Plant Begins Operation
METAWATER Co., Ltd. (President: Yasushi Nakamura, Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter "METAWATER") is pleased to announce that Choa Chu Kang Waterworks (hereinafter "CCK Waterworks"), which adopted METAWATER's ceramic membrane (the CeraMac? system) for the first time in Singapore, commenced operation. A ceremony to mark the occasion was held on August 29, 2019 which was attended by about 100 guests, including the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Masagos Zulkifli.
PWN Technologies (CEO: Joke Cuperus, Headquarters: Province of Noord-Holland, the Netherlands; hereinafter "PWNT"), a partner of METAWATER, conducted demonstration experiments using METAWATER's ceramic membrane with Singapore's National Water Agency Public Utility Board (hereinafter "PUB") for 18 months from 2011 at CCK Waterworks. The result was that the ceramic membrane's stable filtration performance and excellent water recovery rate received a high evaluation which led to its adoption by CCK Waterworks and commencement of operation.
"This reconstructed CCKWW, with its ceramic membrane technology, allows PUB to do advanced treatment of the tap water that we supply to homes, commerce and industry. That we are able to deploy this new technology on such a large scale is the result of years of research, experimentation and rigorous testing. Advanced treatment technologies will allow us to cope with the impact of an increasingly urbanised catchment and the negative effects of climate change on Singapore's raw water quality", said Mr. Ng Joo Hee, Chief Executive, PUB.
In addition to CCK Waterworks, METAWATER and PWNT have a successful track record of delivering the CeraMac? ceramic membrane filtration system to Andijk III Water Treatment Plant in the Netherlands, Mayflower Water Treatment Plant in the U.K., and Sonnenberg Water Treatment Plant in Switzerland. METAWATER is determined to contribute to resolving water issues worldwide by accelerating the development of water treatment technologies using the ceramic membrane.
